Oscar Fashions From Year's Past

On the heels of the 82nd Annual Academy Award nominations being announced (the ceremony airs live on March 7th), images from year's past have surfaced that show what stars wore back in the day.

Isn't it funny how style recycles itself. I've definitely seen sruffy, greasy Caucasian guys with hair like Jodie Foster's and silhouettes for some designers resemble those from the 30s. All images from Oscar.com.

Elie Saab in Your House

Elie Saab after showing his Fall 2009 Haute Couture collection

Elie Saab must be quite happy right now. Two major celebrities attended two different awards shows, each with different audiences, in pieces from his Fall 2009 Haute Couture collection. First, Marion Cotillard wore a one shouldered, beaded and feathered, short dress to the Golden Globes. Then, Rihanna turned up at the Grammys, a week later, in a feathered, beaded and draped floor-length gown. Mr. Saab is having a wonderful moment with this latest bit of exposure, in addition to having two new clients in his books.

Grammy Trivia

The 52nd Grammy Awards just finished airing and I noticed an interesting fact. At tonight's ceremony, Beyonce set the record for most Grammys won in a single night by a female artist, at six. I knew that Norah Jones previously won five in a single night, in 2003, but I didn't know if there were any other women to have this honor. After some time, here are the women that have each won five Grammys in a single night.

Lauryn Hill set the record at the 41st Grammys, in 1999.

Alicia Keys tied Lauryn Hill at the 44th Grammys, in 2002.

Norah Jones joined the group during the 45th Grammys, in 2003.

Beyonce won her first set of five at the 46th Grammys, in 2004.

Amy Winehouse also won five, at the 50th Grammys, in 2008.

Headbands Alike

January Jones, of A&E's "Mad Men", turned up at the 2010 Golden Globe Awards wearing a Lanvin dress. Even better, she was wearing a matching black head band with her hair pulled back. It took me a while to remember where I first saw this look. Now I remember: Bottega Veneta's Spring 2010 collection. Take a peak.

A Practical Use for Haute Couture

While looking at some images from Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli's latest Haute Couture collection for Valentino, I couldn't get the words "a Garden of Eden in cyberworld" out of my head. Granted that Style.com's Sarah Mower used this phrase as a synopsis for the duo's third couture collection for the house, she was definitely onto something. Images from Style.com.

Instantly, I thought of "Space Cases," an 90s Nickelodeon TV show that I loved as a child, starring Walter Emanuel Jones, better known as the "Black Ranger" from the original Power Rangers. In season two of the show, the cast crash land their space ship onto a planet that is similar to Earth and the pieces from Chiuri and Piccioli's collections blend right in (if not literally). Watch the clip and imagine a young native woman appearing, alongside her distinguished mother, clad in Valentino Haute Couture. Or even, imagine if the ship's android, Thelma, got a new wardrobe. Okay Frida

I never really paid attention to Frida Gustavsson. I could never tell her apart from the giraffes that walk and pose along side her. But then models.com posted some images of her shot by Miguel Reveriego. LORD HAVE MERCY, I knew sex sold but jeez.

Look at her in a lace haute couture piece and then look at her in small lace thingy and a camisole over it. HELLO FRIDA. Now I don't have to look up how to spell her last name anymore. Images from models.com.

Miley is a Woman

Miley Cyrus gave a wonderful interview to Harper Bazaar's Amy Larocca, in which she gives her reaction to the American public's reaction to her choice to photograph "wrapped in a bed sheet" for Annie Leibovitz, in addition to her performance at the 2009 American Teen Choice Awards. Cyrus states, "...people don't want to say 'What a great performance' or 'What a great shot.' No one wants to look at something like that and see the positive because it doesn't sell a magazine."

Speaking of selling a magazine, I am the FIRST one to know that magazines have an audience and they publish material that makes their hardcore audience happy and want to renew their subscriptions when the time comes. I am also the FIRST one to know that Harper's Bazaar's hardcore audience probably has an sister somewhere that has children that LOVE Miley Cyrus (assuming she doesn't have children), but please Harper's Bazaar, don't you think that your audience would prefer to see Gabourey Sidibe on the February cover?

I didn't think so.Images from TFS.
